Bioenergy
Bioenergy is produced from the raw material biomass. Biomass is stored solar energy in the form of energy crops, wood or residual materials such as straw, bio waste and slurry. Bioenergy is the all-rounder among the renewal energy sources: Electricity, heat as well as fuels can all be produced from solid, liquid and gaseous biomass. A total of 33.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity was produced from solid, liquid and gaseous biomass in 2010.
As biomass is available and flexibly usable around the clock it plays an important role in energy supply on the basis of renewable energy. Bioenergy provides agriculture with an additional pillar – the agriculturist becomes an "energy-culturist". In this way, decentralised use of bioenergy can strengthen regional added value, close material life cycles and utilise local synergies.
