Biogas

More than 7,100 biogas plants (digesters) with an installed power of 2,780 megawatt produced around 17.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, 16.5 billion kilowatt hours of heat, as well as fuel in Germany in 2011. Therefore, omitting the emission of 12.5 million tons greenhouse gases. Biogas is a particularly versatile renewable energy source, whose potential has just been discovered in Germany. Residual materials – like slurry and bio-waste as well as energy crops such as maize and reeds – can be used in biogas plants.

Background information

Biogas – efficient electricity, heat and fuel production

Biogas offers agriculture an additional pillar to diversify its economic activities.

Background information

Bioenergy is a useful part of crop rotation

Rape can only be grown on the same area every three to four year – a monoculture is therefore excluded.
