Michael Geissler

Michael Geißler

Managing Director of the Berliner Energieagentur (Berlin Energy Agency)

“Many of the as yet unexploited application and development possibilities for energy efficiency and renewable energies in Germany and other countries are becoming increasingly feasible in view of a growing appreciation of the need to protect the climate.”

When did you first get involved with renewable energies? Was there a particular trigger or inspiration?

Of course, when I started working for the Berlin Energy Agency and became acquainted with interesting mentors and mavericks in both a national and international context, for example Amory Lovins and Hermann Scheer.

Where do you see renewable energies in the year 2020?

They will be supplying at least the 20 % share of total energy consumption in accordance with political targets.

What still needs to be done to achieve this?

The legal framework and current funding conditions must be at least retained.

When the day’s work is done, how do you like to relax and switch off?

With my family, and all kinds of ball sports – both the playing and the watching kind.

Expertise: Wind energy, photovoltaics, bioenergie, financing and investing into systems, communal use of renewable energies, national and european frameworks, services around energy efficiency and renewable energies

The Berliner Energieagentur is a modern energy service company located in Berlin. As part of our three business divisions Consulting, Contracting and International Know-how Transfer we develop and realize innovative projects that reduce high energy costs as well as CO2 emissions. While rooted in Berlin the BEA launches activities in regional, national and international markets.

On the initiative of the Berlin House of Representatives the Berliner Energieagentur was founded in 1992 especially due to looming effects of the climate change and a decreasing access to fossil natural resources. Therefore, facing today’s environmental challenges the BEA aims at contributing to a more efficient use of energy.

The federal state of Berlin, the Vattenfall Europe Wärme AG, the GASAG Berliner Gaswerke Aktiengesellschaft and the KfW Bankengruppe hold and equal share of 25% of the BEA. As a public-private-partnership the BEA fulfils a public mandate – nevertheless, all means and methods of doing business are committed to the premise of efficiency. Converging economics and ecology is our daily mission.
