“Solar energy is available in unlimited quantities. There have long been technological solutions in place to make use of it. We’re making it competitive”

When did you first get involved with renewable energies? Was there a particular trigger or inspiration?

I’ve been fascinated by technological innovations since my youth. I first came into professional contact with renewables when I was working at Schott Glas in the US. At the time, those involved in the sector were idealists acting out of pure conviction. The idea itself was bigger than the economic incentives. But nevertheless, this “family” stuck together and retained their faith in the future potential of their innovations. I’m still fascinated by this spirit of optimism to this day. Nowadays, the technology has come along in leaps in bounds and the fundamental idea has been joined by an economic sphere that facilitates the efficient use of solar energy. First Solar is a pioneer in this regard – and we’re proud of that.

What motivates you?

Well firstly, the concept of photovoltaics is fantastic. The sun makes all life possible and we’re working on enhancing the technology to use it in the sustainable production of electricity. I view the rapid growth of the industry and its political aspects as a great challenge and also as an opportunity. Public debate on the subject and the positive image that the sector enjoys also reassures me that I’m doing the right thing. Finally, my team at First Solar is a huge source of inspiration and motivation on a daily basis.

Where do you see renewable energies in the year 2020?

If you go to a nursery school today and ask where electricity comes from, many of the children will reply – from a factory with several chimneys. Ask the same question in the year 2020, and the answer will be different. Primarily more diverse. Water, wind and sun will be perceived as totally “natural” sources of energy. We’re working on it.

What still needs to be done to achieve this?

We in the renewable energies industry must continue down the successful route of cost reduction, in order to enhance competitiveness with fossil and nuclear energies as soon as possible.

When the day’s work is done, how do you like to relax and switch off?

I love travelling and spending time in the great outdoors. I’ve always been especially fascinated by desert landscapes. I also like to ski and play golf whenever time allows. To be honest, I really enjoy spending much of my time working.
