Local advantage
Numerous local authorities and regions, especially in rural areas, are making the development of energy supply through domestic renewable energy the centre of their economic development. Everyone can participate in the decentralised development of renewable energy, e.g. with public wind farms or solar systems. In this way, local citizens, communities, farmers as well as small and medium-sized enterprises promote regional added value: Installation, maintenance and operation of renewable energy plant systems are mostly carried out by local businesses, e.g. tradesmen and technicians as well as agriculture and forestry. A stronger self-generated supply with renewable energy reduces dependency on fossil fuel imports and their rising prices. Local authorities and municipal works, as users of renewable energy, can effectively reduce costs, e.g. through solar heating systems for their swimming pools or through harvesting the energy of biowastes in biogas plants. Instead of paying energy bills to Russian natural gas corporations and Arabian oil sheikhs the energy expenditure then remains in the region. If local synergies are created and cycles closed, renewable energy is an important driver of economic development.
