Biofuels - Options and Opportunities: Blending or Targeting Sectors? Which route should policymakers pursue?
Currently, biofuels are by far the most important source of renewable energy in the EU transport sector. Their future role, however, remains uncertain and disputed. Some question the use of biofuels in general. Others suggest that biodiesel and other crop based fuels have a major role to play in decarbonising transport. If so, should biofuels continue to be blended into fossil fuels across the board and thereby lessen their detrimental impacts? Or should they rather be channeled into particular sectors such as heavy duty transport, shipping or aviation in which renewable alternatives are unlikely to be established in the short to mid term?
At the conference, we discussed which pathways for biofuels could be the most promising in the future – both in terms of competitiveness and for reigning in climate change. This includes input from the scientific side as well as from industry and NGO stakeholders. After lunch, panelists discussed what role biofuels should have in the EU transport energy mix against the backdrop of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) recast process.
