The German electricity mix in 2022

In 2022, a total of 577.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated in Germany. Renewable energies thus accounted for 44 percent of electricity generation and 46.2 percent of electricity consumption. After a wind-weak previous year, wind energy was able to make gains again and accounted for around half of the electricity generated from renewables, or 22 percent of total electricity generation. Due to the shutdown of three nuclear power plants at the turn of 2021/2022 and reduced use of natural gas, the share of lignite and hard coal rose to a combined 31.4 percent. Of the total generation, a net 26.8 billion kilowatt hours were exported to neighboring countries. In order to achieve the climate protection targets, renewable energies and storage technologies must be expanded much more than they have been to date.
