Dependence on imports of Germany's energy supply

Despite the rise of renewables, Germany is still heavily dependent on the import of fossil fuels...

Despite the strong growth of renewable energies in the electricity sector, Germany is still highly dependent on energy imports from abroad. With an import share of 98 percent, Germany’s mineral oil consumption came almost entirely from foreign sources in 2013. Natural gas and hard coal also featured very high import shares of 87 percent each. In order to lessen import dependence without increasing the environmentally harmful use of lignite, domestic renewable energies need to grow further.
