Energy import dependency in the EU and selected countries

Many countries depend strongly on energy imports. Renewable energy can help to reduce import dependancy.

In the EU the relationship between the amount of energy imports and the total available amount of energy has risen since 2010. The dependance on energy imports is especially high e.g. in Luxemburg and Ireland with an import indicator of more than 90 %. Among EU-countries Sweden is the one with the lowest indicator for energy import dependancy. It can be assumed that Sweden and France have low energy import indicators because especially in France nuclear energy is treated as domestic energy despite the fact that it needs uranium imports. The import dependancy of Germany is about in the middle. Norway is the only country today with net energy export due to its large fossil gas and oil resources. Countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina or Moldova show very different energy import dependancy indicators. In order to get more independant from energy imports and to increase political independence it is important to expand the use of domestic renewable energy as well as to decrease energy consumption in total.
