Develoment of final energy consumption in the EU

In order to achieve the energy efficiency targets for 2030 the EU member states have to reduce their energy consumption a lot more than in the past.

In October 2023 the EU recast directive entered into force with a new binding energy efficiency target for 2030, which is more ambitious compared to previous targets. It means that the final energy consumption in the EU shall drop from 894 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) or 39,500 Petajoule (PJ) in 2023 to 763 Mtoe or 33,700 PJ by 2030.
The new efficiency target is a result of a period of exceptionally high energy prices that showed that reducing energy consumption results in economic and energy security benefits.
